Firstly, if you're new to the term "public domain", allow me to give you a general idea of the power contained in these two words. At a very basic level, "public domain" means... |
.. anything that is NOT protected under US copyright law. This includes ALL works published before 1923 AND, under certain conditions, works published up to 1978. Most Federal U.S. Govt. works are also in the public domain.
A 'work' can be anything: a book, a play, music, posters, photographs, illustrations, movies, cartoons, film documentaries, instruction manuals, etc...
Re-publishing and re-packaging creative works that have
fallen into the public domain can make you a lot of money!
The reason is fairly simple: if you find, re-package and sell information that has fallen into the public domain you do not have to pay royalties or copyright fees on that work. Can you tell me about any other business that allows you to...

Walt recognized that the Grimm Fairy Tales were great stories and he was also aware that they were a part of the treasure-chest that exists in the public domain. He altered the names of some of the characters and updated them a little, but to a large extent he simply copied them and created an empire by repackaging and re-releasing these stories to a new generation. |

would have likely also heard of Ted Turner, the U.S.
philanthropist and media mogul, husband to Jane Fonda, and founder
of both CNN and WTBS. Ever watched his TCM, or 'Turner Classic
Movies' channel? That's right… the bulk of the films shown on TCM are in the public domain! Ted Turner can broadcast movies that exist in the public domain all day long, without the need to pay any royalties for doing so. Do you think he is making a profit? If he weren’t, do you think TCM would still be around? recall how I said that most of the information published by the U.S.
Federal Govt is in the public domain? Well, I know of yet another individual who made a fortune by taking the official Navy Seals Manual and modifying it to create his own 'Special Forces Handbook'. He resells this to military enthusiasts through magazines that target that demographic, as well as over the Internet through eBay and via his own website. |
I have quite a number of World World II documentaries in my
library. My father served in a tank regiment with the free French army in
North Africa and later assisted with the liberation of France, whilst my
uncle served in La Resistance - known as "le maquis" - and was
captured and imprisoned by the Nazis (he is still alive and well today at
88yrs of age
).
Many of the WWII documentary DVD's in my library have been created from
public domain footage, and some are 100% unaltered public domain
footage simply burnt to a DVD with an interactive menu, something
anyone could do themselves with DVD creation software that is widely
available for purchase on the Internet. The only cost to the companies
that sell these DVD's are their product packaging (DVD disc and cover) and
marketing costs.
And of course, the material in the public domain is not limited to books,
movies, cartoons, and documentary films. There is also music,
photographs, illustrations, and posters, as well as many other
creative works.
I could go on with examples, but I hope you are starting to see the
